Founded in 1973 by H. Mickey McCabe, McCabe began as a household operation with a single ambulance and family members answering calls at all hours of the day and night. Since that time, McCabe Ambulance has developed onto one of the most reputable and professional operations in the state of New Jersey.
On average, McCabe now answers more than 25,000 calls per year, including 9-1-1 for the City of Bayonne, backup 9-1-1 for the City of Hoboken, 9-1-1 call screening for both municipalities, mutual aid for neighboring communities in Hudson County, and emergency response to the New Jersey Turnpike and Bayonne Bridge. The McCabe Communications Center is accredited by the State of NJ as a Public Safety Dispatch Point and coordinates all responses. EMTs cross-trained as Emergency Medical Dispatchers serve as the point of contact for 9-1-1 and facility callers, dispatching appropriate resources and providing pre-arrival instructions during medical emergencies.
This capability also includes our Specialty Care Transport Units (SCTUs) for critically ill and injured patients in need of a higher level of care. Our SCT units are staffed by a licensed registered nurse experienced in critical care and stocked with advanced life support equipment, including medications, cardiac monitors, endotracheal intubation equipment, and ventilators.
All McCabe Ambulance services operate under the medical direction of Young Yoon, MD, a board-certified emergency medicine physician. Continual quality assurance review and quality improvement activities ensure that our care not only measures up to our own high expectations, but also meet the ever-increasing needs of our stakeholders and standards of the industry at large. Specific initiatives, such as stroke and cardiac care, partner with the hospitals we serve in assuring the highest quality coordination of care. Coupled with the internal training resources of the McCabe Institute of Emergency Preparedness, McCabe Ambulance is able to offer a tailored array of new employee and in-service training that addresses specific clinical and operational goals. These offerings also include BLS, ACLS, and PALS programs as part of our American Heart Association Training Center, EMT continuing education, and community outreach activities.
Founder and President H. Mickey McCabe serves as the EMS Coordinator for the Hudson County Office of Emergency Management. In this capacity, he is responsible for pre-planning EMS response to large scale incidents and mobilizing Hudson County EMS resources during such events. McCabe Ambulance has responded to many large scale events over the years, including both World Trade Center bombings, the 1995 Secaucus train derailment, and the 2009 U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crash. McCabe also maintains and deploys numerous regional and statewide assets, including a Medical Ambulance Bus, ASAP Ambulance, and Rehabilitation unit.
McCabe Ambulance and its employees have been recognized many times over the years, most notability as both the 2004 and 2010 EMS Private Provider of the Year by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. In addition, H. Mickey McCabe has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his continue involvement in working to improve New Jersey’s EMS system.
However, McCabe Ambulance does not wish our reputation to rest on past performance alone. Our effectiveness is measured by every patient encounter and we seek to deliver the highest quality of
patient care on every call.
